Nakuru preacher surrenders to police after attempting to kill his ex-lover

Nakuru preacher Elias Mutugi Njeru has surrendered to police after being accused of a horrifying attack on his ex-lover, Florence Wanjiku Gichohi.

Mutugi, a father of two and leader of Jesus Compassion Ministry Church, is alleged to have stabbed Wanjiku 18 times in a fit of rage.

The attack occurred at their home in Rongai, Nakuru, following a heated discussion about personal and business matters.

Florence revealed she wanted to end their partnership in a land-selling company they co-owned. She also sought repayment of a loan she had given him and had decided to end their romantic relationship.

“These are the reasons he attacked me,” she said from her hospital bed.

Florence described the incident, saying she was left with stab wounds on her head, hands, legs, and back.

Her fingers were nearly severed, and she is scheduled for surgery. Doctors have warned she might lose some of her fingers. Mutugi turned himself in at Nakuru Police Station on Monday, November 25, 2024.

He was accompanied by lawyers from Gakuhi Chege and Associates Advocates. Police re-arrested him at the station and transferred him to Menengai Police Station, where he remains in custody.

The National Police Service confirmed that the surrender followed a manhunt.

Meanwhile, investigators say Mutugi attacked Florence after refusing to accept her decision to end their relationship.

Florence is currently recovering at Optimum Hospital. Her attack has sparked outrage across the country, with calls for justice growing louder.

Political leaders, celebrities, and Kenyans have voiced their concern over the rising cases of gender-based violence and femicide.
