Narok County to meet funeral expenses, cover medical costs for those injured during Angata Barrikoi skirmishes

A protracted land dispute in Angata Barrikoi in Narok County on Monday, April 28 turned violent after five people were killed and several others injured.

The violence erupted when local residents, claiming historical ownership of the 6,300-acre land, blocked the main road to prevent land officials from surveying the area.

The protests would later escalate into a full blown clash between the locals and police officers, leading to injuries on both sides.

Officer in charge of Angata Barrikoi Health Centre, Joel Langat, says four people were brought in dead while one succumbed while undergoing treatment. All victims had sustained gunshot wounds.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said that security had been beefed up in the area, appealing for calm and restraint from the residents.

Governor Ntuntu visits scene

Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntuntu, who visited the area immediately after the incident, extended his condolences to the berieved families and residents.

The county boss said that he had formally engaged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to ensure a thorough investigation is conducted and those responsible are held accountable in accordance with the law.

“It is deeply regrettable that longstanding land disputes have escalated to such a tragic outcome, particularly at a time when we were nearing the resolution of the conflict between the Angata and Moyoi adjudication sections, a process I have personally supervised for the past one and a half years,” Governor Ntutu said.

The County Government of Narok, Ntutu said, will meet all funeral expenses for the deceased, including a seven-year-old child, and will also cover the medical costs for those injured during the incident.

Present during the Governor’s visit were Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johana Ngeno, County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia, and County Police Commander Ngare.

Governor Barchok’s condolence

Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok also condemned the incident, expressing regret at the loss of lives and suffering.

“To the families mourning loved ones, I extend my profound condolences and prayers for strength during this unbearable time. To the injured fighting for recovery, may you find healing and solace as you undergo treatment,” Barchok said.

He added: “As a neighboring leader, I urge thorough, impartial investigations to ensure accountability and justice for all affected. Violence cannot resolve grievances, and dialogue must prevail to address the underlying tensions that led to this tragedy. My administration stands in solidarity with the people of Angata Barikoi and calls for calm, restraint, and unity to prevent further escalation.”
