Politician’s sister

Lilian Seenoi Barr is Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina’s sister.

She is going to become the first black mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council in Northern Ireland.

When she takes on the mayoral role, she’ll not only be Northern Ireland’s first black mayor but also just the third on the entire island of Ireland.

The significance of this moment isn’t lost on Lilian.

As she prepares to receive the mayoral chain of office, she reflects on her humble beginnings.

Further, the incredible opportunities that Derry has provided her.

“It’s humbling,” she says. “Derry has given me so much—a family, a husband, and a place I call home.”Photo: Lilian Seenoi Barr/ Instagram.

Lilian’s roadblocks

But Lilian’s path to this moment hasn’t been without challenges.

Controversy surrounded the mayoral selection process, leading to resignations and even racist abuse.

Despite this, Lilian remains undeterred, focusing on her mission to be “a mayor for everyone”.

Moreover, she is determined to show that Derry is a welcoming place for all.

For Lilian, this isn’t just about breaking barriers; it’s about inspiring others.

She wants young people, women, and minority communities to see her as a symbol of hope.

That dreams are valid and that anything is possible.

“Nothing is impossible,” she affirms. “You can achieve it.”

Lilian’s journey is rooted in resilience and determination.

Before her political career, she worked tirelessly in Kenya to empower women and challenge harmful traditional practices.

Her experience as a refugee led her to establish the North West Migrants Forum, a charity supporting migrants and asylum seekers.

But perhaps Lilian’s greatest inspiration comes from her son, Brian, who has autism.

Concerned by the misconceptions surrounding autism in Africa, Lilian sought a better life for her son, eventually finding refuge in Derry.

As she prepares to take on her new role as mayor, Lilian’s message resonates loud and clear: no obstacle is insurmountable, and every dream is worth pursuing.

Her journey from refugee to mayor serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the boundless possibilities that await those who dare to chase their dreams.
