The National Assembly is set to begin the vetting process for President William Ruto’s nominees for Cabinet Secretary positions on April 14. Among those to be vetted are Mbeere North Member of Parliament Geoffrey Ruku and Hanna Cheptumo, widow of the late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo.
The two nominees were part of the recent Cabinet reshuffle made by President Ruto last month. Ruku has been nominated to head the Ministry of Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programmes, replacing Justin Muturi, who was dismissed following a fallout with the President.
Meanwhile, Hanna Cheptumo has been nominated to lead the Ministry of Gender, Culture, the Arts, and Heritage.
In other changes within the Cabinet, President Ruto swapped CS Aden Duale from the Defence docket to the Health Ministry, while Dr. Deborah Barasa was moved to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
According to a notice by National Assembly Clerk Samuel Njoroge, the vetting will be conducted by the Committee on Appointments, which will later present its findings to Parliament for approval.
The process will commence at 2:00 PM with Geoffrey Ruku, followed by Hanna Cheptumo at 4:00 PM.
Nominees are required to present various clearance certificates, including those from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB). They must also provide clearance from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, the Commission for University Education, and the Credit Reference Bureau (CRB).
The public has been invited to submit written statements on the nominees’ suitability by April 10, 2025.
Once the vetting is concluded, the National Assembly Committee on Appointments will compile a report for debate and approval in Parliament.
