National Construction Authority on collapse of 12-storey Mirema building

Investigations are underway on the cause of collapse of 10-storey building that was under construction.

The building located in Mirema, Roysambu constituency collapsed on Monday at around 12:30 am.

The accident caused significant damage to and adjacent building, a vehicle and a structure belonging to Kenya Power and Lighting Company.

According to the locals, the masons had just left the premise an hour before the accident.

Casualties?

There are no casualties reported so far.

The National Construction Authority released a statement saying that the project was registered under registration number 53127915710189.

They had indicated plans to build a 12-storey residential building.

The building had received approval from Nairobi county government.

The building developer identified as Joseph Kambo Wakiri had an Environment Impact Assessment License from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

Project’s technocrats

The architects involved in the project were  architects Lawrence Maina Mwangi, engineer Anthony Macharia Gatune, and quantity surveyor Joseph Karume Ireri.

Wamie Construction Limited was the company tasked with the construction.

“A preliminary investigation suggests that poor-quality structural concrete used during construction may have contributed to the building’s collapse,” read the statement in part.

The National Construction Authority issued a stern warning to people in the building sector who bend laws.

“Anyone found to have acted against the law or disregarded lawful directions from competent authorities will face the full legal consequences,” said a statement by the National Construction Authority.

An in-depth investigation is underway to identify the exact reason for the collapse.
