NEMA has closed down Ty Woods K. Ltd located at Ketigoi area, Mau Summit, Kuresoi Sub County, Nakuru County following complaints by the neighbouring community over toxic emissions.
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) ordered the closure after it emerged that the company failed to comply with conditions of the Environmental Restoration Order issued on 6th August 2024, followed by an inspection undertaken on 23rd January, 2024.
The facility had fugitive emissions visible from various leakages at the boiler area and entire facility that caused uproar among the neighbouring community due to the possible effects of such emissions.
The company also failed to obtain Emissions License as well as put in place pollution control systems of air pollution pursuant to the Air Quality Regulations 2024.
“The company will cease to operate until adequate measures are put in place to control emissions to the environment, undertake dispersion modelling, install Effluent Treatment Plant, contain oil spillage, clean-up the facility compound as well as involve a licensed waste handler to dispose all streams of waste generated by the facility,” NEMA says.
