Netflix, the popular streaming platform, has announced a significant change to its service in Kenya.
After running a free plan for two years, Netflix is set to end this offering in the country on November 1st, 2023.
The free plan, which was introduced in Kenya back in September 2021, allowed users to access a selection of Netflix’s content without any charges.
This plan was specifically designed for mobile devices and was available on Android phones.
Importantly, it did not include any advertisements, ensuring a seamless viewing experience.
However, Netflix has now decided to discontinue this free plan in Kenya.

In a message to its users, the streaming giant stated, “Hi Netflix member, we’re writing to let you know about an upcoming change to your membership.
On November 1st, 2023, the Free plan will no longer be available, and your membership will end.”
The free mobile plan was responsible for streaming approximately one-quarter of Netflix’s TV shows and movies in Kenya.
This strategic move aimed to foster growth in one of its key African markets, giving users a taste of its high-quality content.
Some of the popular shows available on this plan included global hits like “Money Heist” and “Bridgerton,” as well as African series like “Blood & Water.”
For users in Kenya who wish to continue enjoying Netflix’s extensive library of content, they will now need to subscribe to the various premium plans offered by the streaming service.
This decision aligns with Netflix’s ongoing efforts to increase its revenue and subscriber numbers.
Earlier in the year, the platform began taking steps to combat password sharing by requesting users to verify if they were residing in the same household as the account holder.
This move aimed to ensure that users were not sharing passwords with individuals outside their immediate family.
In a financial report, Netflix revealed that its efforts to crack down on password sharing have been effective.
The streaming service saw a significant increase in subscribers globally during the second quarter, with 5.9 Million new members added.
Notably, the U.S. and Canada contributed 1.17 Million new subscribers from April to June.
As Netflix continues to evolve its strategy in different markets, these changes reflect the company’s commitment to maintaining its leading position in the competitive world of streaming services.
