“Never allow a man to pay your rent!” Karen Nyamu advises ladies

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu now tells ladies never to allow a man to pay rent for them.

Speaking during an interview on Radio 47, Senator Nyamu said she got the advice from her father.

“I lost my mum when I was in university. My father took me to Nakumatt Lifestyle where he bought me a few things; a duvet, and some sufurias, and he paid the bill.

“Then he released me as I joined campus. So me and my father were very close. I remember he told me, ‘mwanaume asiwahi kulipia rent ya nyumba (a man should never pay your house rent)’,” she explained to Mwashumbe and Mwakideu, Radio47 Breakfast show hosts.

He went on to tell Nyamu that if she ever lacked rent she should return to her father’s house.

Karen Nyamu would go against her father’s advice years on, something she admitted taught her a tough lesson.

“Sometimes it is good to test advice so you can agree with the person who offered it to you. I lived in a house in Westlands where the rent was KSh35,000.

“That was very little money for the ‘mbaba’. But it gave him some entitlement and I also did not have freedom. Since I am an independent woman I did not allow that to happen for long,” she added.

Two months into the situation, Nyamu cut off the man and opted to fend for her own needs like she used to before.

Polygamous Marriages

Senator Nyamu acknowledged that she would carry on the advice to her daughters; Tiana (9) and Taraya Wairimu (1).

Nyamu is a second born in a family of four children. She sired two children with Mugithi artist Samidoh, and is often blamed for their separation with Edday Nderitu.

The politician countered the accusations, saying it would be great if both her and Edday would co-exist peacefully.

“Polygamous marriages are legal in our country. The reason for that is to allow all the children to have their father and the women to have a husband.

“I remain hopeful however that even if it takes one year I know it will work out,” Nyamu added.
