New wing at Mama Lucy Hospital to boost capacity and improve services in Nairobi’s Eastlands

Construction of a new wing at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital is advancing rapidly to address the surge in patient numbers, officials say.

The additional facility comes in response to increased demand for healthcare services, a trend linked to recent improvements at the hospital.

During a visit to the hospital, Health and Nutrition CEC Suzanne Silantoi highlighted the urgent need to expand capacity.

“We can’t turn away patients, and the new wing will help accommodate more,” Silantoi confirmed.

She noted that healthcare services have significantly improved under the new administrative structure, which now sees Level 5 hospitals headed by CEOs.

The maternity unit, in particular, has been experiencing high demand. “As of today, October 19th, we have 100 mothers admitted. We admitted 10 new mothers today, with six deliveries—four by caesarean section and two naturally,” Silantoi said.

The new wing is expected to enhance the hospital’s capacity and improve service delivery once fully equipped. The Nairobi County government is committed to expanding healthcare infrastructure to meet the growing needs of residents, especially in densely populated areas like Eastlands.

In addition, Silantoi mentioned that the county is upgrading smaller health facilities across the city to reduce the pressure on larger hospitals and ensure more balanced and timely healthcare services.

“On behalf of Governor Sakaja Johnson, I want to assure residents that Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital continues to operate at the highest standards,” she said.

This expansion is part of a broader initiative by the county government to improve access to quality healthcare throughout Nairobi.
