Police in Ruaka, Kiambu County, on Tuesday morning shot dead two suspected armed robbers, after a fierce exchange of fire.

One police officer was injured in the process and rushed to Nairobi West Hospital.

Confirming the incident, Kiambaa sub-County Police Commander Phineas Ringera says that a Ceska pistol and four bullets - suspected to be owned by a police officer - were recovered from the deceased.

The Special Service Unit (SSU) boss Pius Gitari toldĀ The Standard that the shootout ensued after the robbers defied orders to surrender at Ruaka Bus Stop.

"The suspected robbers were driving away in a Toyota Probox, when our officers challenged them to surrender. The suspects retaliated by shooting at our officers. During the exchange of gunfire, our officers shot the suspects dead. However, one of the policemen suffered a gunshot wound," said Gitari.

It appears that the robbers had planned to rob a business premise in Ruaka town.

The bodies of the deceased have been taken to City Mortuary.
