In Summary
- Some of the key functions the then Governor Mike Sonko ceded to the national government include health services, county transport, county planning and development, county public works and firefighting services and disaster management.
- Governor-elect Johnson Sakaja, during campaigns, pledged to kick NMS out of City Hall.
The functions of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) will revert back to the county government if the deed of transfer is not renewed by October this year, the Public Service Commission (PSC) has said.
The NMS deed of transfer came into existence in June 2020, when the then Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko surrendered key functions to the national government. The contract ends in October.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday, PSC Chairperson Anthony Muchiri said that it is up to the next administration to decide whether NMS is needed or not.
“If the incoming county administration doesn’t want to continue NMS’s contract, then the PSC is willing to revert all services to the County Government of Nairobi,” he said.
Throughout his campaigns, Nairobi Governor-elect Johnson Sakaja had promised to kick out NMS out of City Hall.
Some of the key functions Sonko ceded to the national government, to be executed by the Major General Mohammed Badi-led NMS, include health services, county transport, county planning and development, county public works and firefighting services and disaster management.
