President William Ruto on Tuesday evening [Kenyan time] delivered Kenya’s National Statement at the 77th United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.

It was President Ruto's inaugural speech. He was among over 100 world leaders who have convened to deliver statements and debate on global challenges.

In the speech, he tackled a variety of issues including debt relief, food insecurity, ICT, global peace and instability and the position of the African continent in the global dinner table.

"On behalf of Kenya, I join other leaders in calling upon the World Bank, the IMF and other multi-lateral lenders to extend pandemic-related debt relief to the worst-hit countries especially those affected by the devastating combination of conflict, climate change and Covid-19," said President Ruto.

Kenya is one of the African countries saddled by huge debts. The problem has been compounded by the Covid-19 global pandemic and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict that has negatively affected grain production and importation.

President Ruto challenged the developed countries to recognise Africa's role in the international arena.

"History indicates the last time Africa was the focal point of effective multilateralism was during the Berlin conference of 1884-1885 and the character of the interventions casts a long shadow to date," President Ruto said.

Ambassador Macharia Kamau hailed President Ruto's speech as "another proud moment for Kenya."

"A great speech that laid it all out there for the world to hear! Called out the shame and the failures of the world while prescribing concrete doable &achievable solutions. World class! Another proud moment for Kenya," he said.
