In Summary

  • Although he campaigned while pledging to scrap the CBC, President Ruto opted to appoint a 49-member task force to evaluate the new education system in the country.

  • Prof. George Wajackoyah, however, is urging the president to remove the CBC.

Roots Party leader Prof. George Wajackoyah has called upon President William Ruto to honour one of his campaign pledges and scrap the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).

Speaking in Bungoma on Friday, November 11, Prof. Wajackoyah said that CBC is not kind to teachers, and a very expensive education system to parents who are grappling with the high cost of living in the country.

According to Prof. Wajackoyah - who unsuccessfully ran for presidency in the August 2022 polls -

"I want to tell President William Ruto, please take care of teachers increase their pay these people are suffering. If I could be the president, I would scrap CBC. How can you tell a teacher in Turkana to teach pupils swimming lessons? When I become the president in 2027, will completely scrap it," Prof. Wajackoyah said.

Education task force

Although he campaigned while pledging to scrap the CBC, President Ruto opted to appoint a 49-member task force to evaluate the new education system in the country.

The working party - chaired by Prof. Raphael Munavu - would also recommend appropriate reforms to other sectors of Kenya’s education.

Public engagements by the presidential taskforce begun on November 1, 2022, and they have been collecting Kenyans' view on CBC across the country.
