In Summary

  • President Ruto and Raila Odinga have engaged bitterly on Twitter regarding the petitions seeking the removal from office of the four dissenting IEBC commissioners.
  • The four dissented the IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati's announcement that declared President William Ruto winner of the 2022 Presidential Election.

President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga have engaged in a bitter exchange on Twitter.

The President responding to claims by Raila of trumped-up charges against the four IEBC commissioners accused Raila of impunity. He said the handshake between him and former President Uhuru Kenyatta destroyed oversight institutions.

Handshake 'fraud'

"The lords of impunity, who destroyed oversight institutions using the handshake fraud, should allow parliament to hold rogue officials who put the nation in danger by subverting the democratic will of the people to be held to account," he stated on Friday, November 25 through a social media post.

Ruto asserted that his regime will move differently from the previous one as it will be guided by the rule of law.

"New order is RULE of LAW not wishes of big men," he added.

Raila: "We shall not relent"

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader responded by saying the opposition will not relent.

"There is due process and natural justice, things aren't just done at the whims of the executive. The rule of law must prevail and not your jungle laws that you want to institute so as to subjugate Kenyans to a conveyor belt system of elections come 2027. We shall not relent," Raila said.

Azimio press conference

Raila accompanied by Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua and Prof. Makau Mutua held a press conference on Thursday, November 24 after attending the first session of the petition hearing.

In the press conference, he (Raila) accused Ruto of supporting the petitions seeking to remove the four dissenting commissioners from office.

"The Ruto administration supports this conspiracy because it wants to pick a set of user-friendly commissioners to complete the capture of IEBC for the 2027 election," he said.

He warned the current regime against turning into a 'Nyayo regime'.

"We want to warn this regime that we will not sit back and watch a return of the 'Nyayo regime' by another name."

The four commissioners who rejected the Presidential results (Ruto's win) are vice-chairperson Juliana Cherera, and commissioners Francis Wanderi, Irene Masit and Justus Nyang’aya.
