The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a man who was posing as the agency's investigator and extorting money from unsuspecting Kenyans.
Ibrahim Ngamau Wangari is accused of impersonating EACC sleuths and soliciting money from individuals purportedly to “protect them from investigations."
He was arrested at Quivers Lounge, Nairobi following a complaint from a businessman who was among the millers enlisted by Government to supply subsidized maize flour before the August 9 2022 General Election.
At the time, Ngamau claimed to be investigating the Ministry of Agriculture and some suppliers.
"Ngamau had “summoned” the complainant to appear before him at EACC Integrity Centre Offices carrying various documents including audit reports and all his bank account statements from January 2022 for inspection. He later changed venue to Quivers Lounge where he was arrested.
"He is suspected to be among notorious fraudsters increasingly impersonating EACC Detectives and soliciting money from state officers. His arrest comes in the wake of complaints that the commission continues to receive from members of the public on extortion by imposters," the EACC reports.
EACC is warning Kenyans against falling prey to fraudsters impersonating EACC officials.
"To protect the public from such fraudsters, EACC has not only issued its officers with identification documents, which can be verified on request, but also continues to warn Kenyans to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons presenting themselves as EACC investigators.
Equally important, Kenyans have been advised to always insist to any person claiming to be an EACC Investigator to first identify themselves and further take note that any interview by EACC is undertaken only at the Commission’s premises or in police stations, and not any other place.
The suspects was taken to EACC headquarters for grilling before being taken into custody at Kilimani Police Station.
