Governor Wanga orders investigations after KCSE candidate died shortly after delivering at Homa Bay hospital

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has condoled with the family of Velma Anita Ochieng, a 19-year-old student who died while giving birth on Monday, November 28.
Ochieng, a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate at Nyajanja Secondary School in Kochia, Rangwe, died of postpartum complications at the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital.
Speaking after visiting the bereaved family on Tuesday, November 29 morning, Governor Wanga said that the student passed away shortly after a successful ceaserian delivery of a baby boy.
The family says she had been admitted to the facility on Saturday, November 26 evening after developing preterm pregnancy complications.
The governor say that since she took over as the county boss three months ago, she has taken measures to ensure that all Homa Bay residents get quality health care services.
"We will continue our efforts to ensure no mother ever loses their life when bringing forth life especially if it can be avoided.
"I have instructed the County Department of Health and the Curative Services Committee of the referral hospital's board to separately conduct independent investigations as to the circumstances leading to the loss of Velma's life," she said.
She assures that necessary steps and actions will follow if anyone is found culpable.
