DP Gachagua meets Meru MCAs in bid to broker truce with Gov. Kawira

In Summary
- Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza was saved by the Senate, whereupon a committee led by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale absolved her of the accusations.
- The bad blood with MCAs has persisted since the August 2022 general election.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday evening met with Members of the Meru County Assembly at his home in Hiriga, Mathira, Nyeri County.
The purpose of the meeting, which was also attended by 12 MPs and the County Senator and Kathuri Murungi was to broker a truce between the MCAs and Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
There has been bad blood between the Ward bosses and Governor Kawira since the August 2022 election.
On December 14, the MCAs impeached Governor Kawira over a slew of allegations: nepotism, illegal appointments, unlawful dismissals, misleading campaigns against other leaders, and gross violation of the Constitution.
A week ago, she was saved by the Senate, whereupon a committee led by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale absolved her of the accusations.
DP Gachagua says he was heeding a directive from President William Ruto, "who has asked the leadership to work together in unity for the sake of the people and development in the county."
He says the meeting brought out optimism that a way forward will be found to bring the Meru County back on track.
"I will reach out to Governor Kawira in the follow-up intervention and I am confident that a break- through will be found soon.
"I am happy with the progress we have made at the meeting and the willingness of the MCAs, particularly, to resolve the wrangles for the sake of their people and the county," added DP Gachagua.
Earlier on Sunday, DP Gachagua visited Mount Kenya on the sidelines of the Cabinet retreat and prayed for Meru County.
"We have asked for God’s intervention particularly around the challenges around the leadership of Meru County, which I will meet later as we seek a solution. Mwene Nyaga has heard us," he said.
