Three people died while six others seriously injured on Monday, January 23 after an explosion in a gold mining site in Chemase, Nandi County.

The three - employees of Karebe Gold Mine firm - were working when rival miners in a neighbouring firm carried out massive blasting of explosives in their gold mine. The explosion is said to have extended to where the victims were working underground.

It said that this is a result of a business rivalry, with a new mining firm - identified as Nandi/Chemase - accused of operating illegally without authority from the relevant ministry.

"We are still waiting for the police to arrive so we can move into the ground and remove the bodies," Albert Kiplimo, a human resource official, told TV47 on phone.

Kiplimo said those who set the explosives ran away immediately after they realised people had died.

Efforts to get a comment from the firm's CEO Jeremy Froome failed, the firm's board of directors is expected to issue a comprehensive report later on Tuesday, January 24.

Bodies of the deceased persons were taken to Nandi Hills County Hospital Mortuary and the injured were rushed to Chemase Health Centre for emergency treatment before being referred to Nandi Hills County Hospital.

Karebe Gold Mine, which operates in Chemase location and is famed as the largest gold producer in Kenya, recently got its licence to mine gold in Nandi for 25 years.

The incident, the latest in a series of many, is said to have happened after people gained access to a highly guarded premise and committed atrocities.
