Drama ensued at Itakaibolu village in Kaliro District of Uganda after a man turned up at what was supposed to be his own funeral.
In the bizarre incident that occurred last Tuesday, February 7, a drunk Asadi Ndekeire arrived at his own funeral together with his drunk friends, to the shock of family members and mourners.
What happened
It is reported that Ndekeire - a known village drunk - and his friends arrived at the funeral ceremony late and sat on the seats behind the tent.
But when the coffin had been lowered into the grave, Ndekeire with his friends staggered to the graveside to also send off the deceased by pouring soil into the grave.
“He was a good man who made everyone laugh outside,” Ndekeire said in his farewell words, as reported by Ugandan outlet Daily Monitor. “But inside the home, he was a weak man who was always crying like a baby because his fat wife pounded him like traditional cassava.”
But hell broke lose when villagers recognised the voice. Everyone turned to confirm their fears. One woman who recognised first screamed, with everyone fleeing for dear lives.
A group of men ran after Ndekeire who had now sobered up and was also running for deal life. They cornered him when he slipped up in a muddy road and dragged him back to the village.
The family says that Ndekeire had been missing for several days, something that was not unusual.
But things changed when a sugarcane truck hit and killed a man on the spot near a village bar where Ndekeire was a regular patron.
The man's body - crushed and defaced - was removed to a mortuary in Iganga District.
"Relatives only saw a gray sweater and confirmed it was Ndekeire. The body they were seeing was defaced and badly mangled," Daily Monitor reports.
In his explanation for disappearance, the man alleged that he had been abducted by people he owed money.
