In Summary

  • Police officers on February 15 this year raided Dr. Matiang'i's home in Karen, Nairobi.

    • The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at the time said that they had a search order to obtain CCTV recordings from Dr. Matiang'i's home to establish the facts surrounding an alleged police raid on February 9.

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has faulted the Kenya Kwanza administration for the manner they are handling former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang'i's situation.

Senator Onyonka says that in the history of the country, there has never been such a time when a former powerful minister has been casually treated they way Dr. Matiang'i is been treated.

"Reason is this is a Cabinet minister and also there has never been a time in the Kenyan administration from 1963 when a person who was serving in that government, especially in the docket that Matiang'i has been serving has been handled the way he has been," Onyonka said in an interview with Citizen TV on Monday, March 6 morning.

    Police raid Matiang'i home

Police officers on February 15 this year raided Dr. Matiang'i's home in Karen, Nairobi.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at the time said that they had a search order to obtain CCTV recordings from Dr. Matiang'i's home to establish the facts surrounding an alleged police raid on February 9.

But the senator alleges that police raided the home without a court order.

"He has been attacked and his house broken into, nobody knows whether there were court orders for Matiang'i to be arrested."

    Matiang'i's security detail

On February 19, Dr. Matiang'i left the country for United Kingdom onboard KLM flight 566, with rumours rife that the State wasn't aware he had jetted out of the county.

Onyonka says that the State was not aware of Matiang'i's visit to the U.K because they withdrew all his security detail.

"The police IG had said that he scaled down Matiang'i's security but Matiang'i says all his security was taken and I seem to believe him because that is why he was able to travel out of the country and they don't even know," Onyonka added.

The former CS jetted back in the country on Sunday, March 5 and is expected to present himself to the DCI headquarters today at 11:00 am.
