Two armed thieves have been shot dead and two assault rifles recovered following a fierce shootout Sunday morning in Kigumo, Murang’a county.

The robbers are alleged to have on Saturday staged a robbery at Unaitas SACCO Mununga branch, within Kigumo town, where they made away with KSh1.13 million after disarming a police officer and taking possession of his G3 rifle. 

The other firearm was an AK-47 rifle loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition which the gang violently took from a police officer on patrol within Muthithi area on February 25 and have been on the police radar since.

"In a joint operation by officers from Murang'a County backed up by an elite team from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, the officers combed Kinyona forest before coming across the two who challenged them to a duel," says the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The officers exchanged fire with the thugs killing the two on the spot. The rifles were recovered following the onslaught as well as a bag containing the money stolen from UNAITAS Sacco.

The deceased's bodies were taken to Murang'a Level V Hospital mortuary awaiting identification as a manhunt for the rest of the suspects ensue.
