Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has accused the police of turning an otherwise peaceful protest by Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition supporters into an ugly confrontation.

Senator Sifuna, flanked by other Azimio leaders, says the opposition coalition purposed to hold a peaceful demonstration in Nairobi, but police were hell-bent on thwarting those efforts.

Sifuna also faulted the police for arresting some Azimio leaders, for no apparent reason.

Senate Minority leader Stewart Madzayo, his National Assembly counterpart Opiyo Wandayi, and Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi and her Kilifi South counterpart Ken Chonga were arrested and placed in custody at Central Police Station just when they were making their way to KICC.

"They (police) have arrested the Minority Leaders in both Houses of Parliament and a number of other leaders. This is totally uncalled for," he said.

Reports indicate that the arrested leaders have been taken to DCI Headquarters.
