Sonko offers to help pupil with torn uniform after viral photo

On Tuesday, May 9, a photo of a primary school teacher taking the initiative to hand sew her pupil's torn uniform warmed the heart of Kenyans.

In the photo, the pupil of Siyiapei Primary School in Narok County, wrapped in a leso looks on as her concerned teacher - Madam Joyce Sempela Malit - seals the holes in her uniform.

The photo captured the attention of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who is known for his philanthropic side.

Sonko now says that he did not sleep pretty thinking of the girl's predicament.

"Watu wangu, imagine sijalala poa coz of this pic which I saw of a young girl from Siyiape Primary School, Narok County, with a torn dress circulating on social media," he says.

The flamboyant politician is now seeking the details of the school or parents of the pupil in order to help her.

"I need details of this school or her parents contacts I just want to buy her 5 sets of school uniforms, rubber shoes, official school shoes, her food and school shopping for at least 6months and clear any of her outstanding school fees," he adds.

Madam Sempela, as reported by K24 Digital, has been a teacher since 1989. She was helping the Grade Three pupil whose school uniform had been torn while playing during break time.

"I decided to sew her dress. I can never miss a thread and a needle in my handbag. I closed the door, took my leso, removed her dress and tied her with my leso in case somebody peeped through the windows... The child is young and her home is very far so I couldn't have released the child half naked," said the teacher.
