Crucial dates for graft cases against ex-governors Sonko, Lenolkulal, Wa Iria and Waititu

High profile cases of corruption are coming up in our courts this week.

A number of former National and County Government officials and politicians are expected to appear in court to answer to charges of alleged graft.

Moses Kasaine

The case in which former Samburu Governor Moses Kasaine Lenolkulal and 13 others are charged with conspiracy to commit corruption and abuse of office is coming up for hearing at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court from the 24th through 26th May 2023.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) accuses Lenolkula and his co-accused of conspiring to defraud the county using a proxy company - Oryx Service Station - by supplying fuel. The county, EACC says, lost KSh84.7 million as a result. 

Mohammed Swazuri

Another case where former National Lands Commission (NLC) Chairperson Dr. Mohammed Swazuri and 16 others are charged with conspiracy to commit an offense of corruption and abuse of office is also expected to be heard on Friday, May 26.

Swazuri and his co-accused were charged with fraudulent compensation for land acquired by the commission, leading to loss of KSh221.4 million.

Mike Sonko

The case against former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko and others is also coming up for hearing from 24th-25th May 2023.

In the case, Sonko and other suspects are accused of conspiring to defraud the Nairobi County Government of KSh24.1 million through proxy companies.

Davy Koech

A case against former Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) Director Davy Koech and others is also coming up for hearing on 22nd May 2023.

"Suit for recovery of KSh509 million... being sums due and owing to KEMRI Pension Fund fraudulently acquired or otherwise unlawfully applied by the defendants by virtue of their ex-officio membership of the Fund's Board of Trustees.
