Mike Mbuvi Sonko, removed from office as Nairobi Governor recently, banked on the hustlers’ support to win the seat in 2017.

Mbuvi had sprinted to office by through hope-peddling populism, first as Makadara Member of Parliament (2010), and later as Senator of the “green city in the sun.” In the 2017 General Elections, Sonko shocked even critics by winning the gubernatorial seat.

Cut A Lonely Figure

When he was booted from office in January, 2020 under a barrage of accusations – raging from corruption to abuse of office,- Waititu went into hibernation. He cut the image of a lonely figure, at times spotted walking alone in the streets of Nairobi, sans the retinue of supporters, security and hangers-on.

“When the heat was too much, I decided to take a break from politics and lie low. I think I have reflected enough and this is the right time to return to what I enjoy doing-politics,” he is quoted by The Nairobian as saying.

Yesterday, Waititu officially “returned to what he enjoys doing.” He was cleared by the Registrar of Political Parties to run as an independent candidate. His symbol of choice is a high mast /floodlight- popularly known as “mulika mwizi.”
