‘Next Azimio leader must come from ODM’  says James Orengo

Siaya governor James Orengo has disclosed that the next Azimio la Umoja coalition party leader must be a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

According to Orengo, the person to take over from Raila Odinga in Azimio should come from the strongest party within the coalition party.

“The next Azimio party leader is subject to discussion. However, it must reflect the strength of the party within the outfit,” said Orengo.

The Siaya Governor added that ODM is the largest stakeholder in the coalition, considering its numbers in the Senate and National Assembly.

His remarks emerged at a time when Azimio leader Raila Odinga has expressed interest in becoming the next African Union Commission Chairperson.

Orengo was speaking on Saturday August 3, 2024 at the anniversary service of his nephew, named after him James Orengo, at Sifuyo in West Ugenya.

The Siaya governor explained that his suggestion is based on the Azimio standing orders.

He added that the rules and the standing orders at the national assembly and the senate, nominations in terms of seats in both Houses depend on the strength of the political parties within the coalition.

His sentiments come at a time when members of the Azimio coalition expressed dissatisfaction when four senior ODM officials were nominated to serve in President William Ruto’s cabinet.

For instance, other party leaders within Azimio felt that the Orange party ought to officially join the Kenya Kwanza government.

However, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka  is among leaders who are eyeing to take over the role of Azimio leader from Raila while Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, issued a notice of walking out of the coalition.
