Neymar confirms 2026 FIFA World Cup will be his last

Brazilian football icon Neymar has announced that the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America will mark the end of his international career. The 32-year-old forward, who currently plays for Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, expressed his determination to represent Brazil on the grand stage one final time.

“I know this will be my last World Cup, my last shot, my last chance, and I will do everything I can to play in it,” Neymar told CNN.

Brazil’s World Cup Qualification Challenge

Despite Brazil’s struggles in South American World Cup qualifiers, Neymar remains optimistic about the team’s chances. Brazil currently sits fifth in the 10-nation group, with the top six guaranteed spots at the 2026 World Cup. They hold a five-point lead over Bolivia, who are in seventh place.

“We’re not in a position where we would like to be,” Neymar admitted. “But I have a lot of faith in the team and the young players emerging. Together, we can achieve something very big. We have a year, a year-and-a-half to work hard and reach the World Cup.”

Injury Woes and Comeback Plans

Neymar’s career has been plagued by injuries in recent years. He started Brazil’s first four qualifying matches but sustained a knee injury against Uruguay in October 2023, requiring surgery that sidelined him for a year. He briefly returned for Al Hilal with appearances in late 2024 before a hamstring injury ruled him out again.

Now, the star forward has set his sights on a full recovery ahead of the World Cup. “I want to be there. I’m going to try my best and work very hard to join the Brazilian team,” Neymar affirmed.

Potential Reunion with Messi and Suarez

Neymar also hinted at the possibility of reuniting with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at Inter Miami, the Major League Soccer club owned by David Beckham.

“Playing again with Messi and Suarez would be incredible,” Neymar said during an award ceremony in Dubai. “They are my friends. We still speak to each other. It would be interesting to revive this trio.”

The trio, famously known as “MSN,” achieved immense success at Barcelona, including a UEFA Champions League title in 2015.

Future in the US?

Al Hilal will participate in the expanded Club World Cup in the US this June, where Inter Miami is also set to compete. Neymar acknowledged the allure of MLS, saying, “I’m happy in Saudi Arabia, but who knows? Football is full of surprises.”

“When I left Paris Saint-Germain, the transfer window in the US was closed, so I didn’t have the option. But the future is unpredictable.”

Neymar’s Legacy and Final World Cup Aspirations

Neymar, who will be 34 by the time the World Cup kicks off in the US, Canada, and Mexico, is determined to leave a lasting legacy. “This is my last chance to achieve something extraordinary with Brazil,” he said.
