Nigeria warns against victimization of Nigerians over killing of Kenyan lady in Nairobi

National NewsNIGERIA

The Nigeria High Commission in Nairobi has released a statement concerning accusations leveled against a Nigerian national suspected to be behind the murder of Rita Waeni Muendo in Roysambu, Nairobi.

In a statement dated January 17, 2024, the Nigeria High Commission advised Nigerians living in Kenya to remain calm and be law abiding citizens even as police continue with investigations into the murder cases.

“Following the unfortunate murders of two young ladies in the past couple of weeks which have rightly elicited public condemnation, the High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Nairobi is concerned by the preponderance of online blogs, doctored videos and social media posts, maliciously entrenching a spurious speculation that ‘Nigerians’ have perpetrated these heinous crimes.

“Conscious of some reports of sporadic attacks on Nigerian nationals, it has become important for the Nigeria High Commission to urge all Nigerians in Kenya to remain calm and to continue to be law-abiding and respectable members of the public,” read part of the statement.

At the same time, Nigerians were advised to be vigilant and to avoid unnecessary movements before police conclude investigations and release official communication on the murder incidents in Nairobi.

In addition, the High Commission urged Kenyan citizens  to desist from disinformation and to refer all enquiries to appropriate channels in order to ascertain accurate information.

“The High Commission is also taking proper note of the channels through which such disinformation is being shared and would like to assure that necessary action, within the scope of international law and extant legal provisions of the host authorities will be invoked as appropriate,” stated the Nigeria High Commission.

Family says that Rita Waeni Muendo (pictured) left her aunt’s residence in Syokimau to meet with a friend on Saturday, January 13. However, on Sunday, January 5 at around 5pm, they received a message, delivered from Waeni’s phone number, demanding a ransom of KSh500,000 within 24 hours for her release.

This was after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on January 16 arrested a Nigerian man suspected to be behind the murder of Rita Waeni Muendo in Roysambu, Nairobi.

The suspect was accused of killing the lady and disposing of her body parts in trash bags at a dumping area of an Airbnb apartment at TRM Drive, off Thika Road in Roysambu.

He was arrested while trying to board a flight to Abuja, Nigeria at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

This was after police released CCTV footage showing movements of the Nigerian man, on the day the woman is said to have disappeared.
