Ninety primary school pupils have been hospitalized after consuming drugged muffins in Soshanguve township, located north of Pretoria, South Africa.
The muffins are suspected to have been drugged with cannabis, which led to various symptoms such as nausea, stomach cramps, and vomiting among the affected students.
“This is concerning for us and we call for patience from parents while investigations are underway and learners are recovering,” the authorities called on parents.
The students involved, ranging in age from six to 14, are believed to have purchased the tainted muffins from a street vendor while en route to school.
Teachers noticed unusual behaviour from the students during class and promptly sought assistance from emergency services.
“We implore learners to be vigilant of what they consume and be cautious of who they purchase food from. We wish all the affected learners speedy recovery,” the statement added.
