Njeri Maina: I have done what is right by the young people

Kirinyaga Woman Rep Njeri Maina has come clean on why she voted No for the Finance Bill 2024.

According to Njeri Maina, she understood that the issues were very contentious for the Kenyan people and she sought to understand why.

Additionally, Njeri stated that she held various forums in Kirinyaga County where her people categorically stated that they did not want her to vote yes.

In an Exclusive interview on TV47 with George Maringa, Njeri Maina admitted that voting against the Finance Bill 2024 was a tough call for her.

Finance Bill 2024 tough votes

Woman Rep Njeri Maina shared that there were key interests that were competing on the issue of the Finance Bill 2024.

She expounded that, there were three key positions to consider namely; the party position, the politics, and the people’s position.

In her view, a leader should be able to mitigate these interests and balance them out to create harmony.

Additionally, Njeri included another interest which is self-interest in legislation presented on the floor of parliament and all these interests tend to compete.

However, Woman Rep Njeri Maina stated that when these interests compete, the people’s interests should always lead and be considered above all.

Consequences of voting No for the Finance Bill 2024

During the interview with George Maringa, Kirinyaga Woman Rep Njeri Maina shared that it was difficult to go against the UDA party position.

Njeri went on to highlight the issues that were at stake which compelled her to vote Yes for the Finance Bill 2024.

The party had pronounced itself, the leadership of the house had pronounced itself, I am elected through a UDA ticket and given the fact that I am a young politician,” Njeri noted.

However, Njeri highlighted that she felt it was the right thing to do despite the glaring consequences of defying the party position.

I felt that it was the right thing to do and I said well, if there will be any consequences to be born out of my decision to take an unpopular position with my party, then I will be ready to bear them as a responsible leader,” noted Njeri.

Is Njeri Maina representing Gen Z interests?

On the question of whether she felt like she embodied the youth’s position, Kirinyaga Woman Rep Njeri Maina was clear that she did not speak on behalf of Gen Z-ers.

As Njeri Maina, I have done what is right by the young people and by the people of Kirinyaga County who elected me,” she clarified.

However, Njeri did highlight that there are only two ways to engage the “system” of governance within the confines of the law.

She stated that these ways were; namely being elected into governance and deciding who would be in governance.

Concisely she did share her donuts sharing that there were no moves to be made after throwing out the Finance Bill 2024 on engaging the Gen Z-ers.

For me perhaps I feel that there was no well thought out plan on what next,” Shared Njeri Maina.
