“No Kenyan police officer in Haiti has resigned”: MSS terms report as inaccurate, malicious

The Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) has denied reports that some members of the Kenyan police contingent deployed to Haiti have tendered their resignations due to delayed payment allowances.

This comes after Reuters News on Friday, December 6 published a report that claimed that nearly 20 of the 400 MSS Kenya Contingent in the Carribean nation had tendered their resignation two ago over salary delays.

In a statement on Saturday, December 7, the MSS refuted the report, claiming that Reuters News did not reach out to it for clarification, terming the information as inaccurate and malicious.

“All MSS personnel have received their salaries, including monthly allowances, and no MSS officer has tendered their resignation as alleged. MSS officers remain highly motivated and fully committed to supporting the Haitian National Police (HNP) in conducting decisive operations aimed at dismantling gang networks and restoring stability,” MSS Force Commander Godfrey Otunge said.

Otunge added: “We urge all stakeholders, including local and international media, to seek clarification directly from the MSS before publishing any reports. Our doors remain open for transparent communication. The MSS remains resolute in its mission to help Haiti reclaim its glory and restore peace and security for its people.”

In the Reuters report, three Kenyan officers who requested anonymity said they had not received a response to their resignation letters, and continue to serve in the MSS mission.

The UN-backed Kenya-led mission in Haiti officially deployed its first contingent on June 25, 2024.

So far, some 400 police officers have been deployed with plans to reach a total of 1,000 Kenyan police officers, being part of the 2,500-strong international force.
