The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) elections, scheduled for April 24, 2025, have been postponed following a dispute involving four federations: Kenya Handball Federation, Kenya Volleyball Federation, Kenya Triathlon Federation, and Kenya Taekwondo Federation.
NOC-K Secretary General Francis Mutuku announced the postponement, stating it was necessary to allow these federations time to resolve internal disagreements over which officials would represent them as voting delegates.
The impasse centers on the lack of clarity regarding who within each federation—often between presidents and secretary generals—holds the right to cast the federation’s vote.
This dispute reflects broader confusion and wrangling within several federations, with similar issues observed in other member bodies ahead of the elections.
The situation escalated when fourteen federations, not limited to the four in question, filed a petition with the Sports Dispute Tribunal (SDT) challenging the eligibility of certain delegates.
The SDT responded by issuing a temporary injunction, putting the entire election agenda on hold pending a full hearing and determination of the matter.
The tribunal directed that the NOC-K Annual General Meeting proceed as planned, but without the election agenda, until the case is resolved.
This postponement leaves the leadership transition of NOC-K in limbo, with the race to succeed outgoing president Paul Tergat—who has completed two terms—temporarily stalled.
The SDT is expected to give further directions after hearing the case, which will be pivotal in determining the path forward for the elections and the future governance of Kenya’s Olympic movement.
