Notorious armed robber shot dead, two others arrested in a fierce shootout with police in Juja

National NewsNews

An armed suspect of robbery was on Tuesday, December 5 night gunned down while two others were arrested in Theta area within Juja Sub-County in Kiambu.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the three are believed to be part of a gang of five that had had accosted a male motorist driving home at around 9pm.

Armed with pistols and crude weapons, the men reportedly forced their entry into his white Toyota Passo, before robbing him of money, which was transferred from his M-Pesa account.

“Having gotten wind of the ongoings, detectives based at the Operations Support Unit swiftly responded to the distress call, ambushing the three-man gang while still inside the motor vehicle,” the DCI reports.

The robbers, the DCI says, defied orders to surrender, with one of them springing out of the car and drawing his pistol before firing at the officers indiscriminately.

A shootout then ensued as the detectives responded in self-defense.

“When the guns went silent, sprawled on the walk-way lay the daredevil thug, lifeless. During the melee, his two accomplices managed to escape but not without perforated behinds,” the DCI adds.

A pistol loaded with two rounds of 9mm calibre was recovered from the suspect shot dead, alongside several spent cartridges.

Further investigations also led to the arrest of Elijah Mwangi Muthoni, 45, and David Mitamo, 21, who are believed to be part of the syndicate that has been terrorizing members of the public in Nairobi City.

Efforts to trace the two who escaped are underway.
