In a significant breakthrough, police officers from Voi Police Station have successfully apprehended three notorious highway robbers who had eluded capture for an extended period.
The suspects were arrested following a carefully executed surveillance operation along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
The suspects, identified as Joseph Macharia Mwangi, 40, Peter Muchemi Maina, 36, and Agnes Malemba Mshenga, 32, were intercepted at Vacani Resort while traveling in a white Subaru Legacy bearing the registration number KCJ 842Z.
A comprehensive search of the vehicle revealed several suspicious items, pointing to a well-organized criminal group. Officers recovered three sets of reflective number plates KCR 879U, KCA 583L, and KAZ 946L raising concerns about the suspects’ involvement in vehicle theft or cloning operations.
The police also uncovered a range of items often associated with criminal activities. These included jungle uniforms, a kitchen knife, two Maasai swords, and a mechanics kit equipped with spanners, a jack, pressure pumps, puncture repair tools, brake pads, and various house-breaking tools.
The suspects are currently in custody at Voi Police Station, where they are being processed ahead of their arraignment in court. Authorities believe this arrest marks a significant blow to criminal activities along the busy Mombasa-Nairobi highway, a route often plagued by highway robberies.
Police have urged motorists and the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The operation underscores the dedication of law enforcement officers to maintaining security and combating crime in the region.
Investigations are ongoing, with authorities keen to establish connections to other crimes in the area. The suspects could face multiple charges, including robbery with violence, illegal possession of weapons, and impersonation, among others.
This successful operation highlights the importance of community cooperation with law enforcement agencies in curbing crime and ensuring the safety of all road users.
