The Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) has issued a 21-day strike notice, citing widespread discrimination and mistreatment of nurses across the country.
KNUN Secretary General Seth Panyako announced the ultimatum during the burial of the late Eliazar Mumbo in Kakwa Jwok village, Karachuonyo Constituency.
Panyako accused the Kenya Kwanza administration and county governments of failing to address the grievances of nurses, warning that members would down their tools if the issues persist.
Accompanied by Deputy Secretary General Maurice Opeto, Homa Bay KNUN Secretary Omondi Nyonje, and Trustee Lilian Ogutu, Panyako expressed frustration with the failure to implement a Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) circular recommending salary increments for nurses based on job groups.
He also criticized the lack of uniformity in salaries across counties, leading to disparities within the profession.
The strike threat underscores mounting tensions between healthcare workers and the government, raising concerns about potential disruptions in the country’s healthcare system.
KNUN officials maintain that the strike will proceed if their grievances are not addressed within the notice period.
