Nyali: School gate locked leaving 1,500 pupils out of classes

In Nyali, Mombasa County over 1,500 pupils will not be able to attend classes. This is due to issues between the county and the school management.

According to the videos on local media sites the school gate was locked with chains. It was further blocked by deflated tires of two school buses to stop access.

This is not the first time the school has been in conflict.

Armed individuals previously invaded the school and destroyed it’s perimeter wall in March.

According to Nyali locals, the school is caught up in a legal battle involving a wealthy family who allegedly own the land.

The locals say that the incident was meant to intimidate the people at the school to leave.

The armed individuals reportedly threatened the teachers and residents during the invasion.

The residents have asked the National Land Commission(NLC) to step in before things get worse.

They highlighted that the disputes are impacting the students, causing disruptions to their school year.

“We have tried to report at the county offices, so we get to buy part of the land where our houses are, instead of paying rent for the rest of our lives,” one resident spoke to the press.

Over the past three months, the parents requested the police to look into the matter and hold accountable those causing the conflicts.
