ODM MCA recovering from head surgery after vicious attack by anti-Finance Bill protesters

The ODM Party has reported that one of its senior members was among the victims of last week’s violence witnessed during anti-finance bill protests.

In a statement on its X account, ODM revealed that nominated MCA Catherine Okoth was caught up in the demonstrations last Tuesday while driving out of the CBD. The party claimed she was then attacked by the protesters.

“She has received medical treatment along with her driver and has been discharged. They sustained severe injuries, and she had to undergo head surgery,” ODM stated.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna responded to a viral video on X, confirming that the vehicle in question belonged to Okoth.

In the video, a mob surrounded her vehicle, hitting it with stones and sticks, with some trying to access the interior through the windows.

“This vehicle belongs to Hon. Catherine Okoth, a nominated MCA and the Chairlady of ODM in Nairobi. She was severely injured in this incident and is currently recovering from surgery at Nairobi Hospital,” Sifuna said.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported on Monday that at least 39 people have died and 361 have been injured during the nationwide anti-Finance Bill protests. The data, KNCHR, was collected between June 18 and July 1, 2024.

KNCHR chairperson Roseline Odede regretted that the initially peaceful demonstrations turned chaotic on June 25.

“The protests resulted in several deaths, injuries, and property damage,” she noted.

The deceased included individuals from Nairobi (17), Nakuru (3), Laikipia (1), Narok (1), Kajiado (3), Uasin Gishu (4), Kakamega (1), Kisumu (2), Kisii (1), Mombasa (3), Siaya (1), Kiambu (1), and Nandi (1).

Odede also reported 32 cases of enforced or involuntary disappearances and 627 arrests of protesters. She mentioned that many others are in hiding due to threats from unknown individuals.

Odede condemned the violent and lawless behavior exhibited by some protesters.
