The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has directed the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to swiftly conclude the investigation into the death of 29-year-old Rex Masai within 21 days.
According to a statement released on Friday, IPOA has been tasked with furnishing the Office of the ODPP with a detailed report after conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
The 29-year-old died of excessive blood loss and muscle fractures caused by a single gunshot wound to the left thigh.
The incident was reported to have been an alleged police shooting occurrence that happened within the Nairobi Central Business District during the Anti-Finance Bill protests.
The government’s chief pathologist, Dr Johansen Oduor, who conducted the autopsy, stated that the bullet entered the back of the deceased’s thigh and exited from the front, causing the fatal wound.
Several regions took to the streets to protest against the bill. In Nairobi, protesters threatened to storm the National Assembly building to warn MPs against passing the bill.
The Inspector General of police Japhet Koome issued a statement warning citizens against unauthorized access to the National Assembly.
The IG went ahead and directed the police to protect the parliamentarians from the wrath of demonstrators.
