The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has called for an immediate investigation into reports of illegal waste dumping and sewer system disruption at Stima Plaza, the headquarters of Kenya Power.
The move follows media reports that have raised public apprehension over potential environmental and health risks.
In a letter dated February 26, 2025, addressed to the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the ODPP highlighted the urgency of the matter, warning that if left unchecked, the situation could escalate into a major public health crisis.
“The occurrence has caused apprehension among the public and is therefore a matter of legitimate public interest,” the letter states.
Potential health, environmental hazards
The ODPP emphasized that illegal waste dumping and sewer disruption could have far-reaching consequences, not only for the affected premises but also for the capital city as a whole.
The office stressed the need for prompt action to prevent a potential health crisis.
“Left unchecked, the issue may snowball into a serious health hazard that might have multiple repercussions not only to the area of concern but the capital as a whole,” the letter further warned.
The ODPP has directed the DCI to liaise with key stakeholders in public health, environment, and sanitation sectors to investigate the claims.
The findings are to be compiled and submitted within seven days of receiving the directive.
Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Jacinta Nyamosi signed the letter on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The outcome of this investigation could determine whether legal action will be taken against any parties found responsible for the alleged environmental violations.
