National NewsNews

The police officer who tragically died by suicide at the DCI headquarters in Nairobi has been identified as 59-year-old Corporal Linus Muia Mutunga.

However, Mutunga, who was due for retirement at the end of the year, had already received his retirement letters.

The documents were discovered in the car where he took his own life at the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road.

He served for an impressive 40 years and was a dedicated officer, but it is suspected that he may not have been ready for retirement.

Mutunga was a driver attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations operations department at the time of the incident.

He took his life by shooting himself in the chest inside his car just moments after reporting to work.

Mutunga’s motive

However, the motives behind his suicide are not yet known as various theories are still at play.

Mutunga’s colleagues noted that he had locked himself in his car before the gunshot was heard from the parking lot of the operations section.

His body was discovered by a cleaner in the yard, and DCI boss Mohamed Amin.

Also present was chief government pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor, who also visited the scene.

The cause of death was confirmed to be a gunshot wound to the chest, near the heart.

Moreover, this unfortunate incident is part of a concerning trend of suicide within the police service.

Just last week, a senior officer, Superintendent Ezra Ouma, took his own life in his house in the Utawala area of Nairobi.

Efforts have been initiated by police authorities to address this distressing trend, including offering counselling services.

In addition, the police force is also establishing units to attend to the mental health needs of the police force.
