Ole Sapit responds to Ichungwah’s allegations of being Raila supporter

The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit has responded to allegations made against him by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah.

Ichung’wah had termed Ole Sapit an Azimio supporter after he criticized the Kenya Kwanza government over the failure to lower the cost of living in the country.

This was after Ole Sapit joined other clerics in commenting on the current high cost of living that had been worsening due to heavy taxation and increased fuel prices in the country.

Consequently, Ichung’wah attacked the ACK Archbishop, accusing him of speaking on behalf of Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

However, speaking on Wednesday, October 4, during an interview on Citizen TV, Ole Sapit clarified that he is not a supporter of any politician or political party as alleged by the Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah.

The ACK Archbishop explained that he commented on the high cost of living, based on his personal experience through interactions with citizens in different parts of Kenya.

“I go across the country to dioceses, so I know exactly what Kenyans are going through. Not from hearsay, but from being in their villages,” said Ole Sapit.

For instance, the Archbishop cited his sentiments on September 28, 2023, when he said Kenyans are struggling with the high cost of living due to heavy taxation.

“We believe it’s imperative for the Government to appreciate the fact that Kenyan citizens are already stretched to their limits. Economic development cannot solely rely on taxation as its primary source of revenue,” Sapit said.

He had also accused President William Ruto’s government of failing to operate within its means by relying on borrowing which had overstretched the public debt.

On the other hand, during a church service in Ainamoi Constituency on Sunday, October 1, Ichung’wah criticized Ole Sapit, insisting that he made the remarks because he was supporting Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga in the 2022 elections.

“I want today to tell Ole Sapit that whenever we listen to him, we see the person he campaigned for; the riddles man (Raila),” said the Kikiyu MP.

Ichungwah had also urged Ole Sapit to stop raising concerns about the country’s economy since the politicians he was supporting were the ones who allegedly ruined the economy.
