French forward Olivier Giroud has announced his plans to retire from international football after the conclusion of the 2024 Euro, slated for June in Germany.
In an interview with French publication L’Équipe, Giroud revealed his intentions, stating that he wants to make room for upcoming youngsters to get an opportunity to play for Les Bleus.
“To be honest, this will be my last competition with Les Bleus. Obviously, I’m going to miss it a lot. But I think the French team will be over after the Euro. We need to make way for the youngsters. You also have to be careful not to have one season too many. You have to find the right balance…I’ve always said that I was going to stop when my body asked me to. I think I’ve got two good years left. But as far as the French team is concerned, I think that’ll be the end of it,” L’Équipe quoted the Frenchman.
Giroud has been capped 131 times for the French men’s national team since making his debut in 2011 and has scored 57 goals, making him the top scorer for the team. He surpassed the record set by Thierry Henry, who scored 51 goals for the national team.
Olivier Giroud is among the squad of 25 men called up by Didier Deschamps to represent France at the intercontinental showpiece.
