One student from Chavakali Boys High School perished in a road accident on Monday night while enroute to Nairobi from Kakamega.
The deceased was part of a number of students aboard an Easy Coach bus as they were travelling home for the school holidays.
The bus is said to have overturned at Coptic, Kisumu on Monday evening, leading to the Chavakali student’s instant death.
His body was transferred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Mortuary.
Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander Allan Mwangi stated that police officers were already visiting nearby hospitals to ascertain the number of injured students and their health status.
“My officers are at the scene while others are currently visiting different hospitals to ascertain the exact number of injured students. What we can confirm so far is that one student is dead,” he added.
According to St Johns Ambulance, 10 others were seriously injured and rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.
Last weekend, Thika High School bus which was also ferrying students, was involved in a minor accident at Kuraiha/Mang’u High School footbridge along Thika Super Highway.
A Public Service Vehicle rammed into the school bus, suffering extensive damage on its dashboard.
Luckily, no one died and passengers on board suffered minor injuries. Students in the bus remained safe as only the rear was minimally damaged.
