Six people are receiving treatment at Nyahururu County Referral Hospital after being shot Tuesday amid nationwide protests against the controversial Finance Bill.
Another victim was taken to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for specialised care, while another died from injuries and the body is preserved at the Nyahururu County Hospital Mortuary.
Some victims said they were shot at as they ran for cover during the altercation between demonstrators and security guards, while others said they were caught in the crossfire while going about their regular business.
One of the wounded, Peter Njuguna, is waiting to be transported to the operating room for the removal of a bullet that remains lodged in his foot.
Jesee Gakuhi, a Laikipia youth leader, was shot at close range and injured his right leg, and his attackers allegedly used a gun butt to drive him to the ground. He was reportedly rescued by other protesters, who also took him to the hospital.
The victims reported that the rallies began peacefully, but violence erupted as the number of protestors grew, eventually overwhelming the anti-riot police officers, who allegedly used live bullets to eject the crowds.
