One person dies, 3 injured after perimeter wall collapse in Ruaka

One person was confirmed dead, while three others were seriously injured after a perimeter wall of a residential estate collapsed in Ruaka, Kiambu County.

The perimeter wall collapsed on Sunday April 21, 2024 after a heavy downpour in the region.

Consequently, Kiambu County governor Kimani Wamatangi ordered the evacuation of tenants of three residential apartments after the perimeter wall collapsed.

Governor Wamatangi noted that the tenants should evacuate the apartments to allow inspection of the premises to ensure they are suitable for habitation.

“No one will live in these houses until we complete investigations and approve that the houses are safe for people to live in them. We have given you two hours to take important items from your houses,” Wamatangi said.

Elsewhere, a 15-year-old boy was swept away by water along Bahati’s Nairobi river while crossing to Eastleigh on a sewer line which they have turned into a breach.

According to the mother of the boy, she left the house at around 9 am and when she returned in the evening, she was told that her son slided to the river and efforts to rescue him were not successful.

In addition, area residents said they need a breach between Eastleigh and Bahati as they use sewer lines to cross.

On the other hand, Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja on Sunday April 21, 2024 released a statement on the impact of heavy rains in the city.

Sakaja explained that the heavy downpour has led to loss of lives and destruction of property due to flooding.

“Regrettably, we confirm the loss of one person and there is an ongoing search for a child in Kibra sub-county,” Sakaja noted in a statement.

“In response to the current situation, our emergency teams, led by the Disaster Management Department, are actively engaged in the relief efforts in affected areas.

“We are coordinating closely with all relevant authorities and agencies including the National Government, National Police Service, and the Red Cross, to ensure the safety and well-being of our people and property,” he added.

The Nairobi governor also urged all citizens to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and their property.
