Oscars Awards – winners, standout moments and biggest upsets

The 97th Academy Awards famously known as the Oscars, were held on Sunday March 2, 2025.

The film “Anora” emerged as the biggest winner of the night, taking home five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Sean Baker.

Kieran Culkin delivered one of the most memorable wins, earning Best Supporting Actor for his raw and emotional performance in “A Real Pain.”

Here is a list of the major winners:

Best Picture: Anora

Best Director: Sean Baker (Anora)

Best Actress: Mikey Madison (Anora)

Best Actor: Adrien Brody (The Brutalist)

Best Supporting Actress: Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez)

Best Supporting Actor: Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain)

Best Animated Feature: Flow

Best International Feature: I’m Still Here

Best Costume Design: Paul Tazewell (Wicked)

One of the standout moments of the night was Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s breathtaking performance of “Defying Gravity” during the opening ceremony.

Their powerhouse vocals and stunning stage production left the audience in awe, setting the perfect tone for the night.

Erivo was also nominated for Best Actress in her role in “Wicked”.

But the biggest shock of the night was actress Demi Moore’s loss.

After delivering a career-defining performance in “The Substance” and sweeping the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, she was widely expected to win Best Actress category.

Instead, the Oscar went to Mikey Madison in what many are calling the biggest snub of the year.

The irony itself is painful—The Substance explores Hollywood’s obsession with youth and its brutal disregard for older actresses as Moore’s loss only reinforces this reality.

Despite decades in the industry and one of the most transformative performances of her career, she was overlooked in favor of a younger actress.

Zoe Saldaña’s win for Emilia Pérez also sparked debate.

The film, which was heavily criticized as a “woke disaster” by some audiences, had a polarizing reception.

Many felt her performance didn’t deserve the win, while others praised the Academy for recognizing her work.
