Seven people have been killed while several others seriously injured following fresh ethnic clashes in Sondu area, at the border of Kericho and Kisumu counties.
Three people were killed early Wednesday, October 4, in what appeared to be a retaliatory attack caused by cattle theft.
Confirming the incident, Upper Nyakach Assistant County Commissioner Darwin Orina says rogue youth – armed with bows and arrows – raided the area and unleashed terror on residents.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that it all started when a man from Soin Sigowet Sub-County was killed for allegedly being involved in cattle theft.
The killing of the man is said to have irked Kericho youth who raided homes in Sondu, leading to the deaths.
More security officers have been deployed to Sondu to try and quell the violence.
Deploying police officers to Haiti?
Constitutional lawyer Dr. Ekuru Aukot has slammed President William Ruto’s government for deploying 1,000 police officers to Haiti. yet trouble is at home.
“Our brothers and sisters in Sondu are being killed. Yet our president, for whatever the wisdom is, wants to deploy 1000 police officers to Haiti?
“Why are Luo people being killed in Sondu? Why?” Aukot said on X, formerly Twitter.
– ‘Suicide mission’ –
Dr Aukot has always hold the view that the Kenyan-led mission to the gang-ridden Caribbean nation is a suicide one.
He has put it more bluntly.
“That deployment is a suicide mission for our 1000 police officers.”
