Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has come clean about why politicians dish out money during an election period.

In an Exclusive interview on TV47 with George Maringa, Njeri Maina stated that the electorate is responsible for its leaders.

While answering Maringa’s question on correcting the ill in parliament, she stated that it was an all-round electorate problem.

We have to point the fingers to ourselves as the electorate. The system is also enabled by the voters.” Njeri shared.

Njeri on politicians dishing out money

The first time Kirinyaga woman rep stated that voters are a major part to blame for the ills found within our legislative body.

Njeri went on to elaborate that voters in Kenya, elect leaders based on monies they can dish out during election season.

During the interview, Njeri stated, “At Mashinani level, Politicians dish out money to get a vote.

According to her, the Kenyan electorate exchanges their right to hold leaders accountable upon accepting money to vote a certain way.

Once they do that, as a voter, you lose the legitimacy to question them,” she added.

Systemic Failures in Parliament

Kirinyaga Woman Rep Njeri Maina highlighted how intricate and cumbersome it was to get a bill table on the floor of the national assembly.

Njeri was keen to highlight that there are bills she tabled at the assembly immediately after her election that are yet to be heard.

One such bill is the Health Amendment Bill which proposes a regulation on hospitals withholding remains from their families over pending hospital bills.

Additionally, woman Rep Njeri Maina explained that in parliament, Government Bills are given priority over private bills, which are bills introduced by individual legislators.

In her Analysis, Bills in parliament are prioritized by the House Business Committee, chaired by the Leader of the Majority, in this case, Kikuyu MP, Kimani Ichung’wah.

Quite a barrage of members have bills, then you find that your bill has not been scheduled to appear on the floor of the house,” she explained.

She continues “There are all these systemic Failures like I have said, from the inside, we are doing our best.

Conclusively she stated “I can speak for myself, I am doing my best, from the outside, it might look as if ‘what are you guys doing?’”
