Residents of Obama Estate in Nairobi are living in fear of eviction from a place they have called home for years.
In the latest development, the over 10,000 residents risk being rendered homeless after the original owner of the 18.6 acre land served them with eviction notices.
A court has since ruled that the land was sold to the current occupants illegally, without the knowledge of the legitimate landowners – Broadwell Limited.
The residents now have until January 31, 2024 to enter into an agreement with Broadwell to pay for the land or vacate.
It is reported that the residents illegally bought the land from Daylight Self-help Group, despite attempts by Broadwell to stop the invasion of the land.
Broadwell says that despite trying to stop the invasion of the land several times, they have “always been threatened with violence”.
According to Broadwell Managing Director Nicholas Mage, even Obama Police Station is on their land, although they don’t have a problem with that.
