Over 500 Athletes to compete in the Athlete Kenya National Cross-Country Championships

The 2025 Athletics Kenya (AK) National Cross-Country Championships will now take place at Eldoret Sports Club on February 8, 2025, following a venue change from the Kenya Prisons Training College.

This prestigious event follows the exhilarating AK Cross-Country Series, which saw six fiercely contested legs in Machakos, Kapsokwony, Iten, Olkalou, Bomet, and Kisii. It also comes just after the Kenya Prisons, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), and Kenya Police Cross-Country Championships, as well as the regional championships.

Over 500 elite and upcoming athletes are expected to battle for supremacy in an event that not only highlights Kenya’s unrivalled distance-running prowess but also serves as preparation for the busy season ahead. The championship will feature three race categories including; 10km senior men and women, Under-20 men (8km) and women (6km) race and the 2km loop race for both men and women.

This year will be different with races commencing in the afternoon. This schedule allows for an entertainment segment and a medical camp to be held before the main events, enhancing the experience for both athletes and spectators.

To spice up the competition, AK has revamped the prize money structure, ensuring top performers receive substantial rewards. In the senior 10km races, the winner will pocket Sh200,000, followed by Sh130,000 for second place and Sh100,000 for third place. Those finishing fourth to tenth will receive Sh70,000, Sh50,000, Sh40,000, Sh30,000, Sh20,000 and Sh10,000 respectively.

In the Under-20 category, the top three finishers will take home Sh140,000, Sh90,000 and Sh70,000, with additional prizes for those placing in the top ten. Meanwhile, in the 2km loop race, the winner will bag Sh50,000, with second and third places earning Sh40,000 and Sh30,000 respectively.

Athletics Kenya extends its gratitude to Betika for its unwavering support, with the firm stepping in to sponsor both the Cross-Country Series and the upcoming Track and Field Series. We call upon fans, stakeholders and media to flock to Eldoret and witness Kenya’s best distance runners vie for national glory in the land of champions.
